Lawrence Youth Football Overview

Lawrence Youth Football (LYF Inc.) was founded in 1963. It is a Not-for-Profit organization. LYF provides the fundamentals of football in a competitive environment for youth in Kindergarten through 6th grade in the Lawrence, Kansas area. The organization offers tackle and flag football.

Tackle has four divisions: 2nd - 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade.

  • Cost - $220.00 with shoulder pads and/or helmet
  • Cost - $160.00 without shoulder pads and helmet

Flag has six divisions: K-1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade.  (Flag divisions can be combined due to number of players and teams)

  • Cost - $110.00

Games will begin the first weekend after Labor Day and run through October.  League games are played on Sundays at Youth Sports Complex 4911 W. 27th.  In tackle divisions, LYF partners with other leagues around Northeast Kansas to provide a full and varied schedule for their teams.  Typically 2 games throughout the season, are played at an away location (Basehor, Topeka, Manhattan or Eudora) and very possibly on a Saturday.  This allows for the possibility of a road game within our 7 game regular season schedule.  Flag division games are played against only LYF member teams.  In the K-1 flag division, there is a possibility of playing one road game during the season at an away location (typically Eudora).  At the end of the regular season, the top 4 teams in each tackle division will advance to a playoff, culminating in our Toy Bowl Championship game at Free State High School.  Also, the top 4 teams in each flag division will advance to a single day, playoff and championship held at the Youth Sports Complex.

Online registration is required at lawrenceyouthfootball.org.  Registration link is available on June 15 through the start of the season.  Registration with an established team affiliation is recommended.  If you prefer to sign up individually without a team affiliation you will be assigned to a team.  LYF will assign unaffiliated player based on team and individual player considerations. Secondary insurance is provided with your registration.  All players are required to pay the applicable registration fee prior to being placed on a roster or receiving equipment.  All flag divisions will play 7 on 7 competition.  LYF recommends 10 players per team. If you want to put a team together, please contact the LYF board of directors for approval.

Practices are at various locations, depending on the team you play for. Practices are normally two or three nights per week, again depending on the team.

LYF requires all league coaches to complete and pass an annual background checks which is paid for by LYF when done on our website.  LYF requires all of the tackle coaches to complete annual, USA Football Coaching Certification which is also paid for by LYF. This training provides the fundamentals of coaching in a safe and positive environment.  The USA Flag Football Coaching Certification is also available to LYF flag league coaches, but not required nor paid for by LYF.  If you, or someone you know are interested in coaching please contact or board of directors for details.  LYF welcomes new coaches and teams.
